Packing and declaration bench
Turn a vague instruction into a list of requests that move a number.
People ask warehouses to pack carefully, which changes nothing measurable, and forget to ask for the one thing that changes the chargeable weight.
Basis. Requests are generated from the categories in the parcel and the destination, and each one is written as an instruction rather than a preference. Volume savings are rough planning figures from measured parcels. Parameters last confirmed 2026-03-24.

Before it ships
- 01Ask for the outer carton to be taped on all six edges, not just the seam.
- 02Photograph the sealed carton on the scale before it leaves the warehouse.
- 03Ask for shoes to be stuffed so the toe box keeps its shape in transit.
- 04Confirm the retail box is removed — the box is the single largest avoidable volume in a shoe parcel.
- 05Ask for garments to be folded flat rather than hung — hangers puncture the carton.
Inside the parcel
- 01One layer of bubble wrap on rigid items, and void fill so nothing slides.
- 02No loose desiccant bags left visible at the top of the carton.
On the label
- 01Declare the item description in plain words rather than a model code (destination: US).
- 02Keep the warehouse weight slip and the tracking number in one place.
- 03Mark the shipment as personal use where the line allows a note field.
This is a request list, not a checklist for you to tick off — each line is something to put in the message to whoever builds the parcel, so it is written in the imperative.
Two requests that change the quote, and the rest
Removing rigid retail packaging and reducing void space change packed dimensions, so they change the chargeable weight. Everything else — careful folding, extra tape, desiccant — is worth asking for on damage grounds and will not move the quote at all.
The bench separates those two groups so that the requests worth an argument are not buried under requests that are merely sensible.
Restrictions that end the conversation
Liquids, magnets and loose cells are refused by most consolidated air lines. Finding that out after the parcel is built costs a rebuild; the bench raises it as soon as the relevant box is ticked.
- Confirm the line accepts the contents before the parcel is built, not after.
- Keep the removed retail packaging instruction in writing, because repacking is charged.
- For destinations with biosecurity inspection, declare wooden or straw components up front.
Declaration is part of packing
A description written in plain words clears faster than a model code, and a declared value that matches what you paid is the only declaration that survives a challenge. The bench puts the declaration lines in the same list as the packing lines because they are decided at the same moment.
Questions this gauge gets asked
| # | Question | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Will removing the shoebox damage the shoes? | That is the trade-off the request makes. The bench reports the volume it reclaims so you can decide whether the protection is worth the chargeable weight. |
| 02 | Can I ask for the parcel to be declared as a gift? | Only if it is one. The bench will not generate a declaration that misstates the contents. |
| 03 | Do these requests cost anything? | Repacking is often charged as a service. The estimate the bench prints is the volume reclaimed, not the money saved, because the service fee varies by warehouse. |
These are written as ordinary headings and paragraphs rather than as marked-up questions, because marked-up questions no longer produce a richer result in search.
Entries this gauge pairs with
- What do QC photos actually show, and what do they miss?
A standard set proves identity: the item, its branding, its label, and its overall shape from a few angles. It is good at showing a fault inside the frame and bad at coverage, fit, smell, or anything requiring the item to be handled. Ask for a named area and a named fault instead of a general check.
- What can you buy through an agent, and what gets refused?
Most ordinary goods move without extra paperwork: apparel, footwear, accessories and headwear. Refusals cluster in four groups — liquids, loose cells and magnets, fragile items without double-boxing, and organic material on routes with a separate inspection queue. The refusal belongs to the shipping line, not to the seller.
- How do you ask the warehouse a question that gets a useful answer?
Send one item, one axis, one tolerance. Name the measurement you want — insole length, widest point, chest width, body length — and the range you would accept. Ask for a number with its unit plus a photo of the tape. Shaped that way the question can be answered in one pass; shaped vaguely it comes back as reassurance.
